Most seniors just made it over their first big application hurdle! The first main due date is October 15. Some popular schools among my students with early action deadlines of yesterday include FSU, UCF, FAU, UGA, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and the University of Carolina. Auburn actually accepted their first round of applications on September 15. Other popular schools with the October 15 deadline include the University of Texas Austin and UNC Chapel Hill.

Quite a few of these universities have supplemental essays that the students need to write in addition to their main essay that goes to all of their schools. For schools that ask supplemental questions, the responses are very important and not something to be rushed. It is of the utmost importance that students really take advantage of the summer before their senior year to get working on building their college list as well as working on various parts of their application, including their activities list and main essay. It is even better if students can start doing some of this work during their junior year.

The season is in full swing as most other early applications will be due by November 1 with the final ones (regular decision) due by around January 1. Students will start receiving decisions in December and all throughout the subsequent months leading up to Ivy Day on March 26. Huge congratulations to all the seniors for getting over this huge hump! I know my students have set themselves up with balanced lists and are ready to collect some merit aid in addition to their acceptances. I can’t wait!
