Wake Forest University

Winston-Salem, NC

Wake Forest is a liberal arts college with 5500 students that focuses on interdisciplinary studies. They use a teacher/scholar motto wherein each professor is involved in research. 68% of students take part in faculty-led research, and one third of those students get published. It is highly recommended that students participate in research, and there is quite a bit of funding for this. Students are fully supported in all areas. All freshmen take a writing class and a freshman seminar class. They all get a lower advisor to help them navigate their required classes (called “divisionals”). During sophomore year, students will declare their major and receive an upper level advisor. Business majors need to declare their major earlier. There is no class with more than 50 students. Since students need to take a class in disciplines that are not their strength, there are math classes like probabilities of poker, science classes like plants and people, and English classes like writing for scientists.
